Since The Force Awakens resembles a New Hope, lots of people believe that Rey's past is similiar to Luke's: both have special powers and special parents and were hidden on a harsh desert planet.........However, for what reason would Rey need to be hidden? Let's analyze some theories and see which one makes more sense:
- Was Kylo Ren the one who left Rey in Jakku?
Some fans built a theory based on Rey's vision, where we first see a shot of Luke with R2-D2 in front of a fire, and in the next shot we see a warrior being stabbed through the back by Kylo Ren.
The popular opinion of these shots is that they show the moment when Luke's Jedi Order was destroyed by his nephew, along with fellow members of the Knights of Ren, who may have actually been other students who also turned to the dark side with Ben Solo.
The theory says that Rey is Luke's daugther and that she became a young student of his New Jedi Order and, when it was destroyed by the Knights of Ren, Kylo could not go through with killing Rey, because he hadn't enough courage to kill his cousin. So, he saves her and leaves her in Jakku, where she is left with Unkar Plutt.
One variation of this theory says that Luke was the one who saved Rey (either because he was her father or just a teacher that cared about her) from the Knights of Ren and left her in Jakku so that no one could find her.
The problem with these theories is that the events in the book Bloodline occurs 6 years before the events in The Force Awakens and, at that time, Ben Solo was still one of Luke's students and hadn't yet turned to the dark side and become Kylo Ren.
So, by the time Kylo Ren turned against Luke and helped to destroy the New Jedi Order, Rey was already living in Jakku. We know that because she is 19 years old (according to the Visual Dictionary) in the movie and, when we see her in the force vision as a little girl, she is probably around the age of 6-8.
- Was Rey really left in Jakku?
Thanks to Bloodline, we know that 6 years before the events of The Force Awakens, all was going rather well: Luke was running his Jedi Order, Ben Solo was still his apprentice, the Republic was divided but in power and the First Order was only starting to emerge from the shadows.......So, why would Rey need to be hidden roughly 11-13 years before the events of The Force Awakens if everything was fine?
Also, when Luke was hidden in Tatooine, he was given to his family and Obi-Wan was watching over him. Rey, though, was given to Unkar Plutt, who wasn't her family nor looked out for her. It's hard to believe that someone that cared out for her would give her to him.........
So, she might not even have been dropped on Jakku, but born in it and was simply left behind by her family. In fact, when we see Rey as a little girl, she screams "come back" and not "don't leave me here" (or some other thing that would suggest that she was dropped there), and she is wearing the same kind of garment that she wears during her adult life, implying that she has worn this kind of clothes her entire life.
You must be wondering why would her family leave her behind. Simple: they were horrible people that wanted to leave Jakku no matter what. It's totally possible that her biological parents had already died and she was left with people that didn't care so much about her........The dialogue between Rey and Maz Kanata even implies that her family isn't anyone special and that probably won't play a part in the saga. She advises Rey to forget her past and look for her future: find Luke and become a Jedi.
Anyway, whoever was taking care of her was probably saving money to get out of Jakku and, when the opportunity came, they took it, even if they couldn't bring Rey with. In fact, it's even possible that they "sold" Rey to Unkar Plutt in order to have enough money to leave Jakku. Of course they didn't tell Rey the truth, they probably lied to her, saying that they would come back for her.........that's why she still had hope that they would do it.
There are other evidences that also indicate that Rey was born there: she says "I didn't know there was this much green in the whole galaxy" (when they arrive in Takodana) because she has never been anywhere else but Jakku.
Some people might say that she simply doesn't remember where she was before she lived in Jakku. But she was left with Unkar Plutt when she was around the age of 6-8, old enough to understand what was happening in her life. People might also say that her mind was force wiped by someone.........but why? As we have already discussed, everything was fine at the galaxy during Rey's childhood.
That's it for now guys, I know that most people rather believe that Rey is someone important (a Skywalker or a descendant of Obi-Wan or of Palpatine), but there's a great chance that she turns out to be only a simple girl born in Jakku who was abandoned by her parents or whomever she called family. to leave Jakku with her friends, and they take the ship and leave her
behind. So, that indicates that she has always lived in Jakku.
